Munich-based world sales company Global Screen has picked up international rights for SCARBOROUGH, a drama about forbidden love, starring a top UK cast including Jessica Barden ("The End of the F***ing World", “The Lobster”) Jodhi May (“Ginger & Rosa”), Jordan Bolger (“iBoy”, “Peaky Blinders”) and Edward Hogg (“Imagine”, “Anonymous”). Great Point Media are co-repping domestic and UK rights.
Part love story, part probing social commentary, the film is set in a once glamorous hotel in the British seaside town of Scarborough. Away from prying eyes, two couples laugh, quarrel, and make love as they come to terms with the impossibility of their forbidden love. At barely 16 years old, two of them are still at school... and the others, their teachers.
The film is directed by Barnaby Southcombe (“I, Anna”) and produced by Christopher Granier-Deferre (“Gone Too Far”, “Lady Macbeth”). Embargo Films and Poisson Rouge Pictures are producing in association with Zurbano Media. It is based on an award-winning play written by Fiona Evans.
Barnaby commented "I’m delighted to be working with Global Screen again. This film is about the intensity with which teenagers experience love and loss, the extreme highs of their emotions and the exhilarating, often misguided first steps towards adulthood In up and comers Jessica Barden and Jordan Bolger I found that exciting mix of experience and the fearlessness of youth. With Jodhi May and Edward Hogg, both of whom I’d worked with before, I had two actors still daring to explore the darker sides of their psyche.”.
Christopher Granier-Deferre added, “We’ve found the ideal partners in Global Screen who understood the film from the very first frame, and have been incredibly supportive since coming on board. From a very simple premise Barnaby has weaved a complex and moving tale around a really challenging and urgent subject. It needs an intelligent and refined sales team to take this out into the marketplace, in Julia and her team at Global Screen, we’ve jound just that”.
Julia Weber, Head of Theatrical Sales at Global Screen said: „We are thrilled to work with director Barnaby Southcombe again. His „I, Anna“ took the Audience Award in Vancouver and went on to screen at many festivals. SCARBOROUGH lets us confront ourselves with our own moral pre-conceptions and the teenage lovers’ youthful optimism and careless passion are deeply touching. Acting is outstanding as well as Barnaby’s visual style for the film. SCARBOROUGH is an ace addition to our Cannes line-up.”
Global Screen will start preselling the film at the Marché du Film. A first teaser can be screened at their booth located at the Palais des Festivals, Riviera L7.
