GLOBAL SCREEN, TADMOR ENTERTAINMENT, AND ISRAEL’S CHANNEL 8 TO CO-PRODUCE HISTORICAL ISRAELI DOCUMENTARY MUNICH ‘72
Global Screen, a Telepool brand, has joined forces with Tadmor Entertainment and Channel 8, to co-produce MUNICH ‘72 (3 x 45’), a brand-new documentary series about the atrocity committed by a group of Palestinian terrorists known as Black September, who stormed the Olympic Village at the Munich games in 1972.
Also available as a 90’ theatrical film, MUNICH ‘72 presents a close-up and dramatic representation of one of the most infamous terror strikes of the 20th century, and of the massive failure of a rescue operation that ultimately resulted in the murder of 11 Israelis.
Directed by Roman Shumunov (Back to Chernobyl, Here and Now, Babylon Dreamers), an award-winning Israeli director, writer and editor, and produced by Ronen Machlis-Balzam (Berenshtein), one of Israel’s top television producers, this is the first Israeli series to focus on the Munich Massacre – a chilling story of the terror attack as it has never been told before. Blending documentary and fiction, and supported by newly declassified protocols, the series reveals conversations from the Israeli cabinet during the crisis, as well as unseen German documents divulging discussions which took place in the German crisis room where the event was managed. This newly revealed information forms the basis of the series’ dramatic recreations.
Julia Weber, Head of International Sales and Acquisitions at Global Screen comments “We are highly committed and honored to contribute to this documentary as co-producers and engage people in conversation about the Munich attack at the Olympic Games ahead of the 50th anniversary in September 2022. For the first time, this terrible chain of events and failures in Germany at the time, will be told from an Israeli perspective, including newly revealed material reflecting the historical background and different correlations of the political groups involved.”
Gideon Tadmor, Chairman and Emilio Schenker, CEO Tadmor Entertainment add “We are thrilled to kick off this incredible project that will share new revelations and shed new light on one of the most tragic events in our country’s history. Together with our amazing partners and a visionary director, we will bring the story of the 1972 Munich Massacre to the forefront for a new generation.”
Rinat Klein, CEO Channel 8 comments “We are very excited to be part of this production and work on this ground-breaking project that will change how we look at a significant historical event that still affects our world today.”
Roman Shumunov, Director says “I am humbled and thrilled to work together with our international partners on this exciting documentary series. Together we will shed new light on the tragic events of the Munich Olympics, which continue to cast a shadow upon us to this day.”
MUNICH ‘72 relives the 5th of September 1972, minute-by-minute. A group of Palestinian terrorists invaded the Olympic Village and abducted members of the Israeli Olympic Team and the ensuing political debacle ultimately resulted in a notoriously botched rescue operation that ended with all 11 hostages' deaths. The series focuses on the events that transpired at the Olympic Village and through interviews with athletes, security personnel, high-ranking politicians, and experts, will unpack what really happened on this tragic day in a manner that was not possible until now.
The series combines real-life documentary footage and breath-taking dramatic scenes that are inspired by newly revealed historical information. These tense sequences will immerse the viewer in the tragic events in a completely unique manner. The series will reconstruct the terrorists‘ perspectives on the story and understand their thoughts as they planned and carried out the horrific abduction, while also dramatizing newly declassified protocols from both the Israeli and German governments – two paralyzed authorities unable to act while human beings’ lives are on the line.
The events of the Munich Massacre, in which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict erupted onto a global stage, also tell the story of the Jewish and German nations. Two nations struggling to leave the events of the Second World War behind them only to be met with another tragedy. 50 years after these events, the horrors still echo in the minds of many. Using new and never-before-seen information, MUNICH ‘72 will revisit the tragedy of 1972 and, for the first time, fully understand the horrific story that led to such a devastating conclusion.
