Xi'an, the ancient Chinese Chang'an is an important site of the world's cultures. The city on the Yellow River with its surroundings is one of the birthplaces of Chinese culture and civilization.
North-east of Xi'an, in 1974, the clay army of the first Chinese emperor, with its thousands of warriors, was discovered. Here, too, his huge burial mound, still unopened, is situated. And it was here that, by uniting the country for the first time, Emperor Qin Shihuangdi founded the series of Chinese imperial dynasties which extends up to the present day. Xi'an, Chang'an was the capital city of the Tang dynasty and the starting point of the Silk Road, which led to the Mediterranean. It was here that merchants and artists from all over the world met, here there emerged an exceptionally vibrant, festive culture, in which women enjoyed equal status and took part in all activities of social and cultural life. The film shows the excavation site of the clay army, in detail which was hitherto impossible; it takes us to the sites of Tang culture, shows the treasures in the museums and, in a performance of the Tang theatre, it also shows the magnificent, colourful dancing and music of this time. It takes us to the imperial tombs of the Han and Tang eras, allows us to witness Buddhist rituals in a famous temple and invites us to stroll through the city's Muslim district and to visit the Great Mosque of Xi'an.
Xi'an, das altchinesische Chang'an ist ein bedeutender Schauplatz der Weltkulturen. Die Stadt am Gelben Fluß und ihre Umgebung ist eine der Geburtslandschaften der chinesischen Kultur und Zivilisation.
Nordöstlich von Xi'an wurde 1974 die Tausende von Kriegern zählende Tonarmee des ersten chinesischen Kaisers entdeckt. Hier liegt sein gewaltiges, noch nicht geöffnetes Hügelgrab, hier hat Kaiser Qin Shihuangdi die bis in die Gegenwart reichende Reihe der chinesischen Kaiserdynastien begründet, indem er zum erstenmal das Land einigte.
Xi'an, Chang'an war die Hauptstadt der Tang-Dynastie und der Ausgangspunkt der Seidenstraße, die bis ans Mittelmeer führte. Hier trafen sich Händler und Künstler aus der ganzen Welt, hier entstand eine unvergleichlich reiche Festkultur, in der Frauen gleichberechtigt neben den Männern am gesamten gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Leben teilnahmen. Der Film zeigt die Ausgrabungsstätte der Tonarmee in bisher nicht möglichen Details, er führt zu den Orten der Tangkultur, zeigt die Schätze aus den Museen und zeigt in einer Aufführung des Tang-Theaters farbenprächtig Tanz und Musik dieser Zeit. Er führt zu Kaisergräbern der Han- und Tangzeit, läßt die buddhistischen Rituale im berühmten Famentempel miterleben, lädt ein zu einem Spaziergang in das muslimische Viertel der Stadt und zum Besuch der Großen Moschee von Xi'an.This series portrays landscapes, metropoles, sacred sites and monuments, all of which have made a unique contribution to the cultural heritage of mankind. Each episode breathes life into civilizations which thrived in the past ten thousand years, some of them then vanishing without a trace into the shadows of history. The films describe epochs whose legacy lingers in the perceptions and ideas of our own age, and cult sites which have managed to preserve their religious and cultural power up to the present day.
