4,000 wild elephants still live on the island of Ceylon, in the state of Sri Lanka, most of them in protected nature reserves and national parks. Following the rhythm of the seasons, these herds roam along their centuries-old paths, virtually undisturbed. Yet over a thousand of these grey giants also live outside the parks on this island. Almost every day there are clashes between the inhabitants and the wild elephants who appear in the fields, villages or plantations. Many people die as a result of these encounters. The villagers resort to drastic measures, putting down poisoned nails or shooting the elephants, even though the animals are strictly protected on Ceylon. When incidents occur with increasing frequency, then the government intervenes and, in large-scale operations, it tries to drive the elephants back into the fold of the protected areas.
