Does anyone know what a slender loris is? It's not a parrot, as its name might suggest, but a very small monkey. Slender lorises go about their furtive nocturnal business in the dry forests of Southern India and Sri Lanka. Due to their pointed noses, bat-like ears and eyes that glow in the dark they are said, even nowadays, to have magical powers. A great problem for these nocturnal lemurs is the deforestation of their habitats. Meanwhile, however, in India efforts are being made to protect these animals. With a little luck it is possible to observe the nocturnal family life of the slender lorises and find out what they eat and who their enemies are. Amazingly, the prospects of the wild population seem almost better than those of the zoo animals: among the 28 lorises held in zoos world-wide there are hardly any fertile males. An exchange is dangerous, for the highly-strung animals often don't even survive the stress of the transport. But even if a slender loris does arrive safe and sound in a new home, there is no guarantee of reproduction. As with humans, the slender lorises like to pick and choose their mates. In Frankfurt Zoo they are desperately awaiting a new male. Is there any hope for the slender lorises in the zoo?
