This time, the expedition team's route takes them over land from Istanbul in Turkey along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean to Egypt. On the Bosporus, thousands of white storks cross the narrow strait between Asia and Europe every autumn. Cruising pink-backed pelicans, filmed from a light aircraft on the Syrian-Lebanese border and 40,000 resting cranes off the Golan Heights - these are sights one does not expect to see in this region. In North Africa, the team uncovers a catastrophe: along the entire Egyptian Mediterranean coast, from the Gaza Strip in the east to the Libyan border in the west, over a distance of more than 700 km, nets are blocking the way of migratory birds. Every autumn, at least ten million birds die here. The Strait of Gibraltar is a "hot spot" for observing spectacular underwater migrations. Huge schools of tuna move past here from March onwards as they make their way to their spawning grounds. The coasts of Northern Italy and Southern France also have their share of migrants in spring: occasionally fin whales measuring more than 20 meters in length and the second-largest fish on earth, the basking shark, are sighted here. But unlike the migratory birds and the tuna, no one knows where they're going or where they're coming from.
