Between Canada's Olympic venues of Vancouver and Whistler lies the Squamish River valley, where a unique natural spectacle takes place every year in late January: Hundreds of bald eagles from all over North America converge on the town of Brackendale for the salmons' spawning journey. The bald eagle was almost extinct in 1960, as hunting and the pesticide DDT dramatically reduced the native population of the bird, which is only indigenous in North America. As the national symbol of the United States, the impressive bald eagle has special significance as a species. Strict preservation laws and the elimination of DDT have today engendered a resurgence in the bald eagle population - especially in their most vital habitat of the Pacific fjords between British Columbia, the Yukon Territories and Alaska.
