It is only through the senses that we experience our environment and are able to react to it. The four-part interdisciplinary series "The World of the Senses" runs the gamut from the latest findings in brain research to art, history and education, from the first development of the senses in a baby to their deterioration in old age.
Another person's smell determines whether we like them or not. Although scientists have searched in vain for a human variant of the pheromones found in animals, we still seek out our partners with our noses. If we lose our sense of smell, we also lose our hotline to the brain. We could start suffering from depression and develop problems in our "sexual communication". Thousands of the most different smell stimuli make their way up our noses every day. Our sense of smell is relatively underestimated, as we tend to attribute the most importance to our sense of sight. The team led by cell physiologist Hanns Hatt at the Ruhr University Bochum has managed to uncover a secret. The basic principles of recognizing and remembering around ten thousand different smells had previously not been understood.
