When the race to the poles was won at the beginning of the 20th Century, the last unconquered icy region of the world became the next focus of adventurers and explorers: The eight-thousand-meter peaks of the Himalayas. And with that began the unusual history of the Dyhrenfurth family. The film offers the first portrait of the exciting life of Günther Dyhrenfurth. When the Nazis rose to power, he resigned his professor's chair in Breslau. He undertook two important Himalayan expeditions together with his wife, for which they received the Olympic Gold Medal for Alpinism at the Games of Berlin in 1936, much to the chagrin of the Nazis.Then, from 1952 to 1986, his son Norman undertook seven major Himalayan ventures. He took part in the first American ascent atop Mt. Everest, which marked the pinnacle of his career. He shot the first moving images atop Everest, and was honored by President John F. Kennedy. "To the Third Pole" presents amazing material from the Dyhrenfurth archives, interviews with Prof. Norman Dyhrenfurth and legendary mountaineers like Reinhold Messner and Sir Chris Bonington make the story of these forgotten heroes come alive.

Als zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts die "Wettrennen" zu den beiden Polen entschieden waren, rückte die letzte unbezwungene Eisregion der Erde in den Fokus von Abenteurern: die Achttausender des Himalaja. So beginnt auch die ungewöhnliche Geschichte der Familie Dyhrenfurth. Zum ersten Mal schildert ein Film das wechselvolle Leben von Günter Dyhrenfurth: von seiner Professur in Breslau, die er nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten niederlegt, vom Verlust seines Vermögens und von zwei seiner bedeutendsten Himalaja-Expeditionen. Sein Sohn Norman nimmt zwischen 1952 und 1986 an sieben großen Himalaja-Expeditionen teil - meist als Leiter, immer aber als Filmemacher. Er ist 1963 bei der ersten Everest-Besteigung der Amerikaner dabei und erlebt dort den Höhepunkt seiner Karriere. Dabei entstehen die ersten Filmaufnahmen vom Gipfel des Mount Everest überhaupt. Ein Erfolg, der durch Präsident J. F. Kennedy geehrt wird. "Zum Dritten Pol" zeigt einzigartiges Material aus dem Dyhrenfurth-Archiv.
