There are no more ancestral wild horses in Europe anymore - at least, they are thought to be extinct. But a species of horse living in the southwest of England has long posed riddles. Since there was no trace of the heritage of this pony, people generally believed the so-called Exmoor or Celtic pony was merely a domestic pony gone wild. With the discovery of the Mongolian wild horse, called Przewalski's horse, which was credited with being one of the original horses' ancestors, the Exmoor pony was largely forgotten by experts and scientists. But local farmers found out the robust Exmoor pony could live in captivity as well as in the barren wilds of the moors. They took in the ponies and let them roam half-wild on their meadows and pastures, together with their herds of cows and sheep, while also using them as riding and draft horses. Thus the breed stayed alive, fortunately for all, since the pony turned out to be hiding an amazing and ancient secret?
