The Renaissance was a time of cultural and intellectual rebirth, a time when the arts, literature and the sciences flourished. Philosophy and reason flourished too with the emergence of humanism, which continues to shape the world to this day.
The Renaissance, a word meaning rebirth, was the name subsequently given to the cultural epoch of the 15th and 16th centuries. But there was also an element of return to this rebirth. A return to the values of antiquity. People were looking to a purer language, to a blossoming of culture and the arts. They rediscovered humanism and sought it from the poets and philosophers of the age. Artists and architects too tried to give it expression in their works. The Renaissance was also a time of great change and upheaval, made possible by groundbreaking inventions. Names like Johannes Gutenberg, Leonardo Da Vinci and Donato Bramante echo through the ages, their genius recognized from that day to this.
The great artistic and intellectual accomplishments of the Renaissance have outlasted everything. Humanism shapes the intellectual world to this day and the arts have continued to develop and evolve.
