The Polar Bears Who Graze On Grass (229/268)

There are 19 different populations of polar bear on Earth. Each one comprises approximately 800 to 1,200 animals. Some scientists say that they are so different that we can even speak of different sub-species. In truth, there are not only huge differences in behaviour but also in lifestyle. The TV crew visited the only polar bear population that lives predominantly on grass; they even give birth to their young in dens in the forest, hundreds of kilometres away from the water, because Hudson Bay is only covered with ice for part of the year. Only in winter do the polar bears have a huge hunting ground, because their prey, seals, can only be hunted from the ice. However, the melt in summer marks the beginning of a lean time for these huge bears. Now they must feed on grass and fruits and eagerly await the return of winter. The first sign that their long wait is finally coming to an end is the departure of the ducks and geese to the south. The huge flocks stop off at the southern end of Hudson Bay. This is the first time that the polar bears have access to meat.
