There are sixteen lakes, one after the other, in among the karst mountains, all connected via countless cascades and underground watercourses. They are the Plitvice Lakes. A magnificent spectacle of nature that's constantly reinventing itself. Clean, crystal-clear bodies of water as well as the warm, wet climate create the conditions for a unique interplay between water, air, rock and vegetation.
This lake district, which was declared a national park in 1949, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surrounding forests, which make up three-quarters of the area, serve as reservoirs and as protection against inundations and flash floods, and they give threatened plants a place to survive. But even the natural paradise of the Plitvice Lakes is threatened by climate change.
