The Mysterious Deaths Of The Crocodiles (199/268)

When visitors of the Kruger National Park in South Africa reported about several dead crocodiles along the Olifant River, the veterinarians of the park could at first find no reason for these mysterious deaths.  In order to figure out possible causes for this disaster they set off towards the Olifant-Gorge, a canyon through which the river enforces its way towards the border to Mozambique. And in fact they find a dead crocodile at almost every bend of the river. They even need a helicopter in order to reach one cadaver in the canyon. As they cannot find an obvious cause at first sight the veterinarians decide to sample from the cadavers for an eventual analysis in the laboratory. The water surface rises due to the construction of an embankment at the border to Mozambique and this results in a fundamental change of the ecosystem. Sand banks, the crocodiles' favourite whereabouts, vanish and the formerly rapid-flowing river turns into stagnant, rotten water which poisons the animals.
