Each year butterfly-lovers and researchers accompany the migration of these butterflies. Biologists from the University of Oldenburg are among those following the butterflies on their highway. They have made an amazing discovery: the monarch butterfly apparently uses the sun as a compass. And this leads it every year along the same route right across the USA. Up to now, however, their trail was always lost in Texas. Thousands of voluntary butterfly detectives swarmed out in search of their hiding place. Meanwhile the monarch butterfly has become the most popular species in the United States. During their journey the monarch butterflies feed on the abundant autumn flowers to give them new energy, otherwise they can't make the journey. They wait until the morning before flying on their way - at varying heights depending on the weather situation. In thermal currents they rise up to a kilometre high in the air above their followers down on the highway. On and on they fly, heading towards Mexico. The butterflies cover an average of 70 kilometres a day, yet sometimes they fly up to 330 kilometres.
