The Giant Otters From The Rio Manu (125/268)

The Manu National Park is situated in the heart of the Peruan lowlands: this national park, the largest in Peru, is only accessible by water, and its unspoilt central zone is closed to even the most adventurous tourists. Here in this labyrinth of rivers live the "wolves of the rivers", as they are called in Spanish, the giant otters. These otters can grow up to two meters in length and, together with the jaguar, they are the greatest hunters in the South-American rainforest. Giant otters live in families, they hunt, eat and sleep together, this much is known about them. Yet when the young animals are fully grown they leave their sheltered homes and, until now, this was the end of their trail. For they then roam as "lone wolves" through the backwaters and tributaries of the Rio Manu and the Rio Madre de Dios in search of a partner and an unclaimed territory where they can settle. Researchers have now set off in search of these loners, these "solitarios", in order to discover which routes they follow and what fate awaits them in the virtually impenetrable forests around the tropical headwaters of the Amazonas.
