Experts believe that a third of the world's amphibian species will become extinct within the next few years. During the past years, the population of frogs, toads and amphibians decreased heavily and 13 of the 19 amphibian species are endangered. Whereas the tree frog could be found in almost every garden in the past, it now disappeared almost everywhere. The direct destruction of its habitats more and more eliminates the green clamberer. This, of course, also applies to other amphibian species. A project of the Nuremburg zoo wants to fight this development. A breeding and renaturalization program for tree frog, crested newt and common spadefoot toad is intended to sustain their population in Middle Franconia. With the consent of the government, wild animals are trapped and put in terrariums and aquariums in order to reproduce. When time is ripe, the offspring is re-released at appropriate locations in the wild. The project will support the population so that more adult animals will be able to procreate offspring without human aid.
