What do earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have to do with life on earth? Why are Europe and North America moving away from one another at a speed of 3 cm per year? These questions were answered by Alfred Wegener, an interdisciplinary scientist -astronomist, meteorologist, researcher and balloonist - with his theory of the continental drift. Wegener first presented this theory to the public in 1912. He postulated the existence of one original continent which he named Pangaea. According to Wegener, the present-day continents are fragments of this original supercontinent; they were once joined together and have since been drifting away from one another. Er ging von einem Urkontinent aus, den er Pangäa nannte. Seiner Erkenntnis zufolge sind die heutigen Kontinente Bruchstücke dieses Urkontinents, die früher direkt verbunden waren und sich seitdem voneinander entfernt haben.
