Schoolgirl Carla misses her bus on the way home, and her parents are to busy to come get her. So she hitches a ride with her killer? Inspectors Ivo Batic and Franz Leitmayr get a new assistant, Gisbert Engelhardt, who's convinced they're dealing with a serial killer and compiles a profile of the suspect to support his theory. He claims he can filter out characteristic breathing by the killer in the background of Carla's last cell phone call. But their new colleague is such an oddball, so full of quirks, that the inspectors are soon trying to get rid of him by any means possible. Which only make matters worse, however, as Gisbert tries to prove he's got what it takes for the homicide squad, and sets out on his own to apprehend the killer?
