No-one can say exactly why dolphins touch our hearts as they do. Or why they are evidently able to free even autistic children from their mental confinement. Nuremberg Zoo has installed a dolphinarium so that those who have no access to the sea can still make contact with these very special animals. Seven dolphins live here under the watchful eyes of experienced trainers. In co-operation with the University of Würzburg they have produced a report on the treatment of handicapped persons. Some are even lucky enough to join the dolphins in their pool. However, the zoo's primary concern is for the wellbeing of its dolphins. And in this they are obviously successful: Europe's oldest dolphin couple resides here in Nuremberg, together with its children - soon to be joined most probably by some grandchildren. And this year, in particular, there was all sorts of excitement in this extended family.
