Anyone who has ever seen it is unlikely to forget this bird. The long red beak, the bald head and the black feather ruff around its neck make the bald ibis quite unmistakable. Yet it is rarely to be seen in the wild, for it is among the most threatened bird species in the world. Only about 200 of these birds still live on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. In the past it was a common species, even in our gardens it used to dispose of the snails. Maybe this will soon happen again, for a team of biologists in Grünau, in Austria, intends to bring these birds back to our region. No easy enterprise, for this has never been done before. With extreme sensitivity, great courage and inventive powers of imagination they are trying to accustom tame bald ibises to a life in the wild. A daring experiment has been launched.
