The wilds of Africa - this conjures up immediate visions of Krüger, Serengeti and other national parks, of savannas with elephants and lions, and perhaps of rare apes. Virtually unknown, however, are the magnificent natural expanses such as those of the Ethiopian highlands - and this although this Afro-Alpine region has meanwhile become one of the hot spots of species preservation. Not only is this area the home of many unique birds and plants, it is also the exclusive habitat of a very special animal species whose numbers have been reduced to under 400 - the Ethiopian wolf. In the Bale mountains in the south-east of the country, Africa's wolves survive in heights of between 3,000 and 4,000 metres and there they hunt their favourite prey - the mole rat. The expansion of grazing land poses a threat to the graceful creatures, as does creeping "genetic extermination", i.e. interbreeding with domestic dogs. The latter are now also infecting the last pure-blooded pack of wolves with distemper and rabies.
