An orca baby is born! Whenever whale researcher Ken Balcomb sees this, he gains fresh hope. For the orca whales off the west coast of the USA urgently need offspring. The population, which in the summer months hunts for salmon off the coast of San Juan Island near Seattle, has now dwindled to no more than 90 animals. Not enough to secure their long-term survival. Up until the mid-1970s many of them were captured for entertainment parks. Moreover, highly toxic PCB in the sea has made many of the animals ill and infertile. Ken Balcomb excitedly photographs the new orca baby that keeps resurfacing with its mother right next to his boat. He knows every single animal of the Southern Resident community; they live together in extended families and have distinctly social family structures. Yet Ken Balcomb makes another discovery that does not please him at all. For some days warships of the US Navy have been conducting operations in the Strait of San Juan. His underwater micro, with which he normally listens to the sounds of the whales, picks up the terrorising noise of a sonar. Shortly afterwards Ken Balcomb witnesses a drama that will have repercussions in Congress and in the White House.
