Tears Of The Cheetahs (228/268)

Cheetahs in Namibia don't have it easy: they are regularly hunted and killed, often leaving behind orphaned cubs. They can be lucky though: many are brought to rescue centres where they are raised and then released back into the wild when ready. Namibia's Bushmen tell an old folk tale about how the cheetahs got their "tears" permanently imprinted on the pelt of their faces - it was after one cheetah lost her young. A similar fate has befallen many of the cheetahs in the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. Most are orphans whose mothers have been killed, generally by farmers who will not tolerate the predatory cats being on their land. Tearmark and Ayla are both orphans who were raised in Naankuse, first by people, and then by a surrogate mother, Lucky, a three-legged cheetah who can no longer be released into the wild. Tearmark and Ayla can however; they are now four years old and are set to be re-released in NamibRand, a region on the edge of the Namib Desert. To survive there however, they both need to learn a great deal. Most especially how to hunt for themselves...
