On the eve of his wedding to Sandra Mangold, a departmental manager of a pharmaceutical company in Berlin, the director of the research institute VIVITEST, Professor Eugen Jähnicke, is found murdered in cold blood. The cause of death is mysterious, but one thing is clear: his death has been "arranged". The dead professor is lying on the dissection table of the animal pathology department and his body is stuffed full of drain tubes, testing probes and electrodes. The detectives Till Ritter and Felix Stark suspect that the perpetrators wanted to make a statement and are to be found in animal protectionist circles. Therefore even Caro, the Professor's stepdaughter becomes a suspect, as the animal protectionist had a violent fight with him shortly beforehand.  However Professor Jähnicke's private life must also be investigated since the attractive widower had a penchant for affairs. His last mistress was the supervisor of animal experiments, Dr. Claudia Knobba. This was before he decided to marry Sandra Mangold - a bitter disappointment for Dr. Knobba. Was it perhaps a crime of passion? Sandra Mangold also draws suspicion on herself: Ritter catches her red-handed in Professor Jähnicke's sealed office, deleting computer files. Also the Professor himself had destroyed documents in a shredder the day before his death.  What were the research institute and the pharmaceutical company mixed up in? Is this the real reason for Professor Jähnicke's death?
