At the christening of the long wished for princess Rosa, her fairy godmothers, thirteen in all, are eagerly awaited. It is tradition that they offer the child gifts such as beauty, wit and musical talent.

However one of them arrives late and is rejected by the king. She is deeply offended and therefore casts a spell upon the princess saying that on her 15th birthday she will die suddenly due to piercing her finger on a spindle. By the time the spell is cast the twelfth fairy has fortunately not yet made a wish for the princess. However it is already certain that her wish will not be able to reverse the wicked fairy's spell completely. Therefore she decides to amend the spell in a way it will not result in death. The beautiful Rosa will have to sleep for one hundred years. She will be awakened by the kiss of the Prince in search of the sleeping beauty?

König Arthur und Königin Uta wünschen sich seit langem ein Kind. Als die Königin schließlich ein kleines Mädchen zur Welt bringt, ist die Freude so groß, dass der König ein Fest gibt und die weisen Frauen seines Reiches dazu einlädt.

Dreizehn solcher Frauen gibt es in seinem Reich, weil er aber nur zwölf goldene Teller hat, von welchen sie essen sollen, muss eine von ihnen daheim bleiben. Diese ist daraufhin so erzürnt, dass sie sich Zugang zum Fest verschafft und die junge Prinzessin verwünscht: An ihrem 15. Geburtstag soll sie sich an einer Spindel stechen und tot umfallen. Die Hofgesellschaft ist schockiert. Den Fluch kann niemand ungeschehen machen. Da aber hat eine der Weisen eine Idee: Sie wandelt den Todesfluch in einen hundertjährigen Schlaf um, von dem sie ein schöner Prinz mit einem Kuss erwecken soll?
