Surfing in the internet has meanwhile become part of our everyday life. Information, games, bank transactions - billions of data are sent, received or processed around the clock. The technology that makes this possible is the World Wide Web, together with e-mail the most frequently used tool in the internet. We owe this revolutionary technology to one man of genius: the programmer Sir Timothy Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee worked at CERN, now the European Organization for Nuclear Research. He wanted not only to interconnect documents on a computer, but also to link documents on several computers to different places. And this idea led to the World Wide Web. A suitable network structure of computers linked to one another already existed at that time: the internet. It offered the ideal "room" for the realisation of this vision. ISurfen im Internet gehört mittlerweile zu unserem Alltag. Informationen, Spiele, Bankgeschäfte - Milliarden von Daten werden rund um die Uhr versandt, empfangen oder bearbeitet. Die Technologie, die das ermöglicht, ist das World Wide Web, neben eMail die meist genutzte Anwendung im Internet. Wir verdanken diese revolutionäre Technologie letztlich einem einzelnen, genialen Programmierer: Sir Timothy Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee arbeitet im CERN, dem Europäischen Zentrum für Teilchenphysik. Er wollte nämlich nicht nur Dokumente auf einem Rechner vernetzen, sondern auch Dokumente auf mehreren Computern an unterschiedlichen Orten verlinken. Und diese Idee sollte schließlich im World Wide Web münden. Eine entsprechende Netzstruktur miteinander verbundener Computer gab es damals bereits: das Internet. Es bot den idealen "Raum" zur Verwirklichung dieser Vision.
