You don't have to dive very deep to find one of the most beautiful
tropical fish, the Banggai cardinalfish, which lives at a depth of five to
thirty feet among coral reefs and sea urchins in its natural habitat, the
Banggai archipelago off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Above and below water, this unusual mouthbreeder
is fascinating to watch at all stages of life. As the only fish in its family,
the males harbor the newborn young in their oral cavities until they have grown
a bit. The cardinalfish is in high demand as an aquarium fish, which may spell
doom for the breed. Our expedition leads us to remote Indonesian islands, where
an ordeal for the fish begins that many do not survive, which finally brings
them to the tanks of aquarium fans worldwide. The cardinalfish experts at the
Monaco aquarium have hatched a plan to protect the species together with a
dedicated Indonesian conservationist.
