Rio de Janeiro is surrounded by the jungle of the Atlantic rainforest. As a result, countless wild animal species have made their home in the teeming metropolis over the past decades. It is not only the marmosets introduced in the 1980s that have since become common sights even near roads, but also large constrictors and the caimans that live in the city's waterways. Sloths have been able to survive on Rio's famous surfing beach because the water sports enthusiasts there are all very much in favour of protecting the neighbouring jungle. There is even a national park in the centre of the city. Coatis and capuchin monkeys live happily in the Floresta di Tijuca that surrounds the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Even in some of the favelas, efforts are increasingly being made to protect the wild animals. And because the city is in the middle of the Atlantic rainforest, now and again you can end up with an unexpected visitor in your kitchen... Filmmaker Andrea Rüthlein shows how and where these wild animals are making their way in the urban jungle that is Rio de Janeiro.
