Few Alpine animals have captured human imagination like the Alpine Ibex. For centuries it has played a central role in fairy tales, superstition, traditional medicine and culture, due to the stately appearance of its mighty horns. But those horns were also its doom, since it was hunted almost to extinction.
The last of their kind survived at the foot of one of the most massive mountains in Europe - the Gran Paradiso in the border between Aosta and Piemont. Placed under protection in 1856 by the King of Savoy, Vittorio Emmanuele II, the Ibex population was able to recuperate here. To the great envy of his neighbors, the king refused to part with even a single animal, preferring to keep them for his hunting sport. Somehow, however, the majestic horned beast has again spread to the eastern Alps: Alpine Ibex at the foot of Austria's Grossglockner are again raising their young. How did it happen??
