Portuguese biologist, Bernardo Rebelo de Andrade returns home to find a whole range of species conservation projects underway in Portugal, as experts here work to prepare the way for the return of the Iberian lynx, the Iberian wolf, as well as native species of goat, rabbit, red deer, horse and cattle.
Biologist, Bernardo Rebelo de Andrade has spent the last number of years working on species conservation projects in Africa and Brazil. Now back in his native Portugal, he has found that there is a great deal for him to discover right here at home, with huge efforts underway to protect and conserve native wild species:
Bernardo watches dolphins who have settled here in the Sado estuary - a rarity that has occurred only three times throughout Europe. The Iberian lynx is also making a long-awaited comeback. The first animals are being released from a breeding station into the wild of the Guadiana Nature Park. The Iberian wolf population is spreading again from the north without any outside help. The large predators are more than welcome in the private reserve of "Faia Brava" in Côa Tal, because every effort is being made here to prepare for the return of creatures that once roamed wild. Already more than 50 Garrano, an ancient horse breed, live here together with a herd of the robust Maronesa cattle. Iberian goats, red deer and rabbits are set to follow soon - and one day not only will there be wolves for nature enthusiasts to admire here but lynx too.
