Passionate Oberammergau

Every 10 years Oberammergau gets Passion play fever! Even abroad in England, Japan or America the Oberammergau Passion play has long become common knowledge.   Since the vow after the plague of 1633, when the village elders swore that they would perform the "play of the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years, the people of Oberammergau have developed a great passion for their Passion play. For the extremely famous mass scenes there are up to 1,000 people on stage. The film tells the experiences and stories of various villagers whose families have often been part of the Passion play for generations. It accompanies the story of how the biblical spectacular comes into being, right up to just before the premiere in mid May 2010 - from the "Barterlass", when residents are called on to let their hair and beards grow, the exciting selection process of the actors, to the rehearsals of various scenes central to the piece.  

The feature Bavarian Passion in the Holy Land (45 min) shows how the director and the leading actors prepared themselves for 2010's performances on an educational journey through Israel - to places where the story of Jesus took place.

Alle 10 Jahre herrscht in Oberammergau Passionsspielfieber! Aber auch in England, Japan oder Amerika gehört das Oberammergauer "Passion Play" längst zum Allgemeingut.

Seit dem Pestgelübde von 1633, als die Gemeindevorsteher gelobten, alle zehn Jahre das "Spiel vom Leiden, Sterben und Auferstehen unseres Herrn Jesus Christus" aufzuführen, haben die Oberammergauer eine enorme Leidenschaft für ihr Passionsspiel entwickelt. Oberammergau zählt heute 5000 Einwohner, aber gut die Hälfte spielt bei der Passion mit. Erzählt werden die Erlebnisse und Geschichten unterschiedlicher Dorfbewohner deren Familien oftmals seit Generationen an den Passionsspielen mitwirken. Wir begleiten die Entstehungsschritte des Bibelspektakels, bis kurz vor die Premiere Mitte Mai 2010 - vom "Barterlass", bei dem die Einwohner aufgerufen werden sich Haupt- und Barthaar wachsen zu lassen, der spannenden Auswahl der Spieler bis hin zu den Proben.

Die Reportage BAYERISCHE PASSION IM HEILIGEN LAND (45 min) zeigt wie sich der Regisseur und die Hauptdarsteller auf die Passionsspiele vorbereiten und begleitet die Protagonisten auf einer Reise nach Israel - zu den Orten, wo Jesus gelebt und gewirkt hat.
