This two-part documentary focusses on the antique city of Palmyra; ancient trading and military routes led to and through this city. Palmyra is a great oasis, a place to rest and stay overnight for the caravans travelling from Mesopotamia to the West, to Damascus and to the Mediterranean.

The first part begins with the desert and the Bedouins who live there; for since time immemorial, Syrian society and culture has been determined by the Bedouins and the city-dwellers. The ancient cultures developed along the banks of the Euphrates -  for example that of the Mari, which is as distant in time from the heyday of Palmyras as the antique culture of the "Bride of the Desert" is from our day and age.

Crac de Chevaliers, one of the best preserved medieval fortresses, is an important testament to the age of the crusaders. In a valley near this fortress is the Cloister of St. George, where we see a baptism in the Orthodox ritual.

Diese zweiteilige Dokumentation stellt die antike Stadt Palmyra, zu der und über die viele der alten Heer- und Handelswege führten, in den Mittelpunkt. Palmyra ist eine große Oase, ein Rast- und Übernachtungsplatz für die Karawanen, die aus Mesopotamien nach Westen, nach Damaskus und bis zum Mittelmeer zogen.

Der erste Teil beginnt mit der Wüste und den in ihr lebenden Beduinen, denn seit Urzeiten wird die Gesellschaft, wird die Kultur Syriens bestimmt von den Beduinen und der in den Städten wohnenden Menschen. Die alten Kulturen haben sich entlang des Euphrat entwickelt, so die von Mari, die von der Blütezeit Palmyras so weit zeitlich entfernt ist, wie die antike Kultur der "Braut der Wüste" von heute.

Ein bedeutendes Zeugnis aus der Kreuzritterzeit ist der Crac de Chevaliers, eine der am besten erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Burgen. In der Nähe dieser Burg liegt in einem Tal das St. Georgskloster, in dem wir eine Taufe nach orthodoxem Ritus erleben.

Die alten Handelsstädte Homs und Hama stehen am Ende des ersten Teils.
