In the series important inventions and discoveries from the spheres of geoscience and civil engineering are presented. The viewer gains insight into both the scientific and the socio-political background of a discovery or an invention. Pioneers of science are portrayed, subjects of research are presented and their further development up to the present day is traced. The process and functioning of the research objects are explained by means of computer animation. Dramatized scenes shed light on the working conditions and methods of the scientists. Particularly impressive are the historical film documents, some of which date back to the early years of cinematography. Sich in die Lüfte zu heben wie die Vögel ist ein uralter Traum der Menschen. Den entscheidenden Anstoß für die Entwicklung unserer heutigen Luftfahrt gab Otto Lilienthal mit seinen Gleitern aus Weidenruten und Leinwand. Sie beruhten auf genauen Beobachtungen des Vogelflugs und einem sorgfältigen Studium der Aerodynamik. Im Sommer 1891 unternahm Lilienthal in Berlin seinen ersten Flugversuch. Die Anchricht über seinen Erfolg ging um die ganze Welt. 1896 stürzte Lilienthal tödlich ab. Die Luftfahrt entwickelte sich danach aus einer Verbindung von Gleitern und Flugmotor. Mit Hilfe historischer Dokumente erzählt der Film die Frühgeschichte des Fliegens.
