On Safari in the Wild Animal Park, hovering above the zoo in the cable car or watching the show of the killer whales in SeaWorld: the San Diego Zoo in California offers three completely different ways of experiencing animals, three zoos - three zoo concepts. Experts regard the San Diego Zoo as a Mecca of zoo-keeping and of scientific research on animals. For decades the Wild Animal Park has been a worldwide front runner in the breeding of extremely threatened animal species. Oryx antelopes, for example, which were bred here, were resettled in Oman - for the first time it was possible to reintroduce an extinct species to its homeland habitat. And SeaWorld must be the world's most famous dolphinarium, showcasing orcas, dolphins and sharks along with an entire range of marine-dwellers. Visiting the three zoos we compare the various ways in which the animals are presented - conventional zoo-keeping, performing in a show or breeding for the preservation of the species. And, of course, we see how the animals benefit from the diverse concepts.
