Humpback whales are the most endangered species among these giant mammals. It has been estimated that their stocks have diminished by about 80% within the last 30 years. For two decades now the Australian couple Trish and Wally Franklin have been researching the humpback whales in Hervey Bay. In springtime it is the female whales, in particular, who come here with their babies. The two researchers know many of the whales personally, they recognize them by the distinguishing marks of the flippers and the skin colour. The researchers also study the singing of the whales - modern sonar devices help to record the individual noises they make. A DNA data bank helps to distinguish the animals by means of skin particles and faeces samples.
