The five-part series "Mediterranean Expedition" starts in Marseilles, in the south of France and takes the viewer on a journey through Italy and on further to Greece. The region around the Mediterranean is the cradle of Western culture and birthplace of its legends. The flamingo from the marshes of the Rhone delta is the legendary phoenix from the ashes. The Little Owl, the owl depicted in the temples of Athens, is considered a symbol of wisdom. The golden jackal is the Egyptian god of darkness. But where can these creatures be found today, what lies beneath the myths? Do these heroes of the old legends still have a chance of a future in the modern Mediterranean? In antiquity, dolphins were considered the messengers of the Gods, now they struggle to find food in the overfished Mediterranean and live on the scraps from fish farms. Mediterranean Expedition ultimately makes one thing very clear: these fascinating creatures can really only survive in special protection zones - and there are far too few of these.
