Susdal - it could be a city from a Russian fairy tale. In the Middle Ages it was one of the most important cities far and wide, larger than Paris or London - now it has been relegated to depths of a Russian backwater. Yet it is a typical Russian city with a Kremlin, churches, palaces and fortified cloisters, which defended the Orthodox faith at first against the Islamic Mongols, later against the Catholic Swedes. It is one of the places in the environs of Moscow which surrounds the 600-year-old Russian capital like a golden ring. It was in these cities, cloisters and churches of the "Golden Ring" that the heart of Russia used to beat - until the October Revolution. Now, after over 70 years, the bells can be heard chiming regularly once again, and the remaining cloisters and churches radiate their former splendour.

Susdal - eine Stadt wie aus einem russischen Märchen. Im Mittelalter eine der bedeutendsten Städte weit und breit, größer als Paris oder London - heute tiefste russische Provinz. Eine typisch russische Stadt mit Kreml, Kirchen, Palästen und Wehrklöstern, die den orthodoxen Glauben zunächst gegen die islamischen Mongolen und später gegen die katholischen Schweden verteidigten. Es ist einer der Orte rund um Moskau, die sich als goldener Ring um die 600 Jahre alte Hauptstadt von Rußland winden. In diesen Städten, Klöstern und Kirchen des goldenen Rings schlug bis zur Oktoberrevolution das Herz Rußlands. Nach über 70 Jahren hört man dort wieder regelmäßig die Glocken läuten, erstrahlen die verbliebenen Klöster und Kirchen in neuem Glanz.
