London, Capital of the Empire (39/39)

What began with the discovery of the New World reached its zenith in the mid-nineteenth century during the reign of Queen Victoria: England as a great power. It was a world event in 1851 when Crystal Palace and with it the first international Industrial Exhibition were opened in Hyde Park. London, the linchpin in the network of the vast British Empire, was once again the undisputed focal point of the world's interest. Yet the modern and splendid centre of the great industrial and colonial power represents only one side of contemporary reality. The London of the slums and of crime shows the other side of a society whose attention was focussed on the glory of the Empire and not on the problems at home.

Was mit der Entdeckung der Neuen Welt begonnen hatte, fand seinen Höhepunkt in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts während der Regentschaft von Queen Victoria: England als Großmacht. Es war ein Weltereignis, als 1851 im Londoner Hyde Park der Crystal Palace und gleichzeitig die erste internationale Industrieausstellung eröffnet wurden. London, der Ort, an dem alle Fäden des riesigen britischen Empire zusammenliefen, war einmal mehr der unbestrittene Mittelpunkt des Weltinteresses. Doch das moderne und prächtige Zentrum der größten Industrie- und Kolonialmacht repräsentiert nur eine Seite der zeitgenössischen Realität. Das London der Elendsviertel und der Kriminalität zeigte die Kehrseite einer Gesellschaft, deren Augenmerk auf der Größe des Reiches und nicht auf den Problemen vor der Haustür lag.

The films describe epochs whose legacy lingers in the perceptions and ideas of our own age, and cult sites which have managed to preserve their religious and cultural power up to the present day.
