In the beginning there were the termites. With the emergence of the ants, the termites were driven underground. Until the present day they live mostly in complete darkness. Since it is almost impossible to see them, they are capable of causing great damage. Originally termites were to be found only in dry, hot regions, yet meanwhile they have spread to almost all areas which are more or less tolerable for them - and they are moving in on man and his cultural assets. Whereas the Aborigines put them to good use and had their wind instruments hollowed out by them, termites have become the terror of modern man. Many valuable libraries - for example, the library and secret archive of the Vatican, as well as some historic wooden sculptures and monuments - are threatened by termites. Virtually invisible to the human eye, they cause destruction in concealment. No matter whether hand-written folios, important files or valuable carvings - after the onslaught of the termites all that remains is often no more than a pile of dust.
