Lions - Daily Danger in the Gir Forest (9/35)

The Gir National Park in India is the last place in the world where Asian lions roam through the forests, and nowhere else do lions and humans live together in such close proximity as here. The lions seize about half their food from the cattle herds of the Maldharis, a pastoral tribe living within the borders of the National Park. Life in the forests of India has wrought many changes in the lives of the Asian lions; 200 years ago their habitat extended from Greece to East Asia. They have now adapted their hunting strategies to cope with thorny trees and thick bushes; unlike their African cousins they no longer live together in large prides, and the pashas, the male lions, keep their distance from the lionesses and their young.
