Kumbh Mela - A Dip in Immortality
Kumbh Mela is the world's biggest pilgrimage celebration. Four cities put on the festival in cycles of 3, 6, 12 and 144 years, with the culmination every 12 years in the city of Allahabad.
Allahabad is especially holy to Hindus, since it lies at the confluence of the two holy rivers, Ganges and Jamuna. From January to March 2013, the biggest Kumbh Mela ever took place, with over 120 million pilgrims in attendance - a colorful celebration and a spiritual carnival. Leading gurus attend, worshipped by thousands of followers, along with the naked Naga Sadhus, famed ascetics who live as hermits in remote areas, only appearing in public at Kumbh Mela, and millions of pilgrims from India and around the world.
