An idyllic scene in the Allgäu, on the lower slopes of the Alps. From the centre of a vast landscape of grassy meadows there rises up a large, round hill, crowned by old, gnarled trees. This is the habitat of an ancient race - the badgers, who have made their ancestral home here in the depths of this hill. Badgers are not uncommon in this country, but they have always been shy creatures. In the past, badgers were occasionally shot when they strayed too close to a farmer's property. Nowadays, these animals, renowned for the repellent smell of their defensive substances, are no longer killed. They are tolerated as cute, unobtrusive animals who do no harm to anyone. When night falls, the adult members of the badger clan set off on kilometre-long excursions into the surroundings in search of something to eat. And they are not particularly choosy. The farmer, on whose land the badgers' burrow is situated, can certainly confirm this. Many of his hens have disappeared, never to be seen again. But he leaves the animals in peace and is even rather proud of being the owner - even if only with regard to the land - of one of the oldest badgers' burrows in the region.
