Indus - On the Shores of Eternity (10/39)

The cultures of Egypt and Mesopotamia still fascinate us today due to their advanced science and engineering. Of much lesser renown is the third civilization of this era which blossomed along the Indus between 3500 and 1900 BC. We now know that this river civilization extended over a much larger area than the realms on the Nile or the Euphrates and Tigris.

Most famous are the ruins of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa. They are a source of constant amazement with their cleverly devised urban planning, sophisticated drainage system, large public baths and multi-storey residential houses. Trade with regions both near and far and an extremely effective system of agriculture formed the bases of life for the people in these city communities.

Die Kulturen Ägyptens und des Zweistromlandes faszinieren uns bis heute ob ihrer fortgeschrittenen Wissenschaften und Technik. Weitaus weniger bekannt ist die dritte Hochkultur dieser Zeit, die entlang des Indus zwischen 3500 bis 1900 vor Christus erblühte. Heute weiß man, daß sich diese Flußkultur über eine weit größere Fläche erstreckte, als die Reiche am Nil oder an Euphrat und Tigris.

Berühmt sind vor allem die Ruinen von Mohenjo Daro und Harappa. Sie verblüffen mit einer durchdachten Städteplanung, einem raffinierten Abwassersystem, großen öffentlichen Bädern und mehrgeschoßigen Wohnhäusern. Handel bis in ferne Gebiete und eine höchst effektiv betriebene Landwirtschaft bildeten die Lebensgrundlage der Menschen dieser Stadtgemeinschaften.

Im Gegensatz zu den anderen beiden Hochkulturen lebt diese noch bis heute fort: in Indien, mit manchen überlieferten Traditionen, die heute noch den Hinduismus und die Vorstellungen der Landbevölkerung prägen.
