Who doesn't understand this animal? Not only does it sleep through the entire cold and rainy winter, but it does not reappear until everything is in full blossom - the dormouse. Then it creeps grumpily out of its den, tree hollow or nesting box and just wants to eat, eat, eat. Although the animal of the year 2004 is certainly one of the greatest sleepyheads in the animal kingdom, in summer it turns into a lively hobgoblin. With its huge eyes and soft velvety coat it is a really cute animal. Here the dormouse is rarely to be found, but although very few people have actually seen it, its name is known to everyone because of June 27th, known in Germany as "Siebenschläfertag". Sibenschläfer means both seven sleepers and dormouse. According to an old farmers' saying if it rains on this day, then it will rain for the next seven weeks.) Of course the little hobgoblin doesn't like the winter and the cold and reacts accordingly. But what makes the dormouse a kind of weatherman? Is there something in its behaviour that gave rise to this weather maxim?
