Harvest before Dawn (1/7)

For the pharmaceutical industry and its research the knowledge of the Central-American indigenous population is extremely valuable. Over the centuries they have made a selection from the abundant species of medicinal plants in Mexico on which scientists are now able to concentrate their research. And, indeed, this has resulted in the discovery, for example, of an effective herbal compound that is proving to be a very good remedy for one of the most rapidly spreading illnesses of modern civilisation - diabetes II.  Experiments on rats as well as a series of clinical experiments have confirmed the results. In Mexico the plant - cecropia - is already being used with success.

Für die pharmazeutische Forschung und Industrie ist das Wissen der mittelamerikanischen Ureinwohner extrem kostbar. Aus dem ungeheuren Artenreichtum mexikanischer Heilpflanzen haben diese im Laufe der Jahrhunderte eine Vorauswahl getroffen, auf die sich die Wissenschaftler nun konzentrieren können. Und tatsächlich wurde dabei z. B. ein wirksames Pflanzenpräparat entdeckt, das gegen eine der am rasantesten zunehmenden Krankheiten der modernen Zivilisation, Diabetes II, sehr gut wirkt. Ein Experiment an Ratten sowie eine klinische Versuchsreihe bestätigen die Ergebnisse. In Mexiko wird die Pflanze - Cecropia - bereits erfolgreich angewendet.
