Harry Potter's Owls (252/268)

Barn owls are among the most beautiful but also the most mystical of the owl species. Since they like to nest in old ruins, abandoned towers or in graveyards, they have landed themselves with the reputation of being omens of death and as a result were often forced from their habitats by their human neighbors.
However, the success of the "Harry Potter" series has spelled disaster for owls after it triggered an owl-mania worldwide. Millions of children were suddenly demanding owls as birthday gifts. These striking birds with their heart-shaped faces were taken in huge quantities from their native habitats in Western Europe, with many being sold to Russia. Once there, however, they did not get to see any forests or meadows but instead were to be kept indoors by their owners as fluffy playthings. Of course this could not end well when one considers that these nocturnal hunters tend to screech at night and might occasionally scratch the furniture, and so many of them were simply released when they became too troublesome.
What a stroke of luck then when one of these birds ended up in the hands of Alexej and Jana Muraschow, who operate a rescue center for injured and orphaned wild animals...
