There are already more gypsies in Europe than Danish people. Estimates range between six to eleven million people. Inspite of being everywhere they are mostly invisible. Nowadays Europeans know more about fish in deep sea than about gypsies. Stanislav Muchas film tries to change that:
I spent 30 days with gypsies in eastern Slovakia. Each day while filming I was in a state of tension as I never knew what would await me. And yet I couldn't help being infected by their zest for life, their good humour, their time-honoured need to complain, their eloquent gestures and their generosity. Children told us repeatedly that they prefer to be referred to as "gypsies". Instinctively they simply disliked all these well-meaning terms such as "Roma" or "Sinti". They had understood that labels do not change circumstances. The gypsies I visited live from social welfare and child benefits, in squalid housing, run their televisions and radios on car batteries. On average each gypsy woman has six children, yet many have 12, 14 or even 16 children. They are the most rapidly (if not the only) growing population group in Europe. Their number is estimated at between 6 to 11 million. They are scattered across the entire continent - in their own villages or camps which are not easy to find, but also in urban slums with dilapidated, prefabricated high-rise buildings. And this in the European Union, not far away from us.
