Grzimek's Trail in Asia (19/34)

When Professor Bernhard Grzimek engaged in his first projects in Africa in aid of its threatened species, he already constantly emphasised that the aim was also to support an impoverished population. The Frankfurt Zoological Society, founded by Grzimek, extended its activities to Asia, where the protection of the species also stands and falls with the living standard of the indigenous population. As long as there is a market in Vietnam for dead monkeys, there will always be hunters who venture forth into the most remote jungles.Meanwhile, however, Grzimek's heirs are in operation here, as in the Philippines and in Indonesia. They are the resolute guardians of such magnificent wild animals as the langurs of Vietnam, the writhed-billed hornbills on the Philippine island Panay or the orang-utans on Sumatra.

Schon als Prof. Dr. Bernhard Grzimek in Afrika seine ersten Projekte zugunsten der bedrohten Tierwelt in Angriff nahm, machte er immer wieder deutlich, dass es dabei auch um die Unterstützung einer armen Bevölkerung geht. Die von Grzimek gegründete Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt dehnte ihre Aktivitäten bis nach Asien aus, wo der Artenschutz ebenfalls mit dem Lebensstandard der einheimischen Bevölkerung steht und fällt. Solange es in Vietnam noch einen Markt für erlegte Affen gibt, werden sich auch Jäger finden, die in die abgelegensten Urwälder aufbrechen. Aber inzwischen sind hier, wie auch auf den Philippinen und in Indonesien, die Erben Grzimeks im Einsatz. Sie sind die entschlossenen Hüter so prachtvoller Wildtiere wie der Languren Vietnams, des Korallenschnabelhornvogels auf der philippinischen Insel Panay oder der Orang-Utans auf Sumatra.
