Gorongosa National Park in the middle of Mozambique is over 4000 square kilometers large. Once it was a haven for herds of animals similar to Tanzania's Serengeti. It was famed for its elephants with two-meter tusks, weighing hundreds of pounds. That was in 1975, one year before the outbreak of a 17-year civil war.Gorongosa was the main battlefield of the bloody conflict. Soldiers slaughtered the elephants for their ivory. The animals were soon extinct in Gorongosa, anything that could be hunted for food or profit was virtually exterminated. Land mines did the rest. At the dawn of this century, there were only 100 elephants left in Gorongosa, all missing their tusks, left over as worthless by poachers. Only in 2004 did the restoration of the park slowly begin, first with the support of an American foundation, then starting 2006 with animals from South Africa. As wildlife returns, Gorongosa once again is becoming a haven for fauna and flora after decades of devastation and destruction. The two-parter illustrates the preservation work and difficult resettlement of new animals.
